Preparing Walls Before Painting — A Step-by-Step Guide

When people plan a paint job, they spend most of their time choosing the shade and too little thinking about preparing the wall underneath it. Yet it's that preparation that decides whether the final result looks professional or amateurish.

The first step is inspecting the current state of the wall — are there cracks, old nail holes, or unevenness that needs repairing before applying filler compound. Painting over such flaws only makes them more visible, not less.

After repairs, filler compound is applied in several thin layers, sanded between each one, until the surface is completely smooth to the touch and under light. This step is the one most rushed when people do it themselves, and it's exactly where the quality difference shows most.

Only once the wall is properly prepared does painting come next — ideally in two coats, with the floor, furniture and joinery protected beforehand. A well-prepared wall handles even a lighter colour without visible imperfections that strong daylight would otherwise highlight.
