When Drywall Is a Better Solution Than a Masonry Wall

When you're thinking about a new partition wall, drywall and traditional masonry are two different options with different strengths — the choice depends on what matters most to you in your specific situation.

Drywall wins when speed and a clean process matter to you — the work takes significantly less time, there's far less dust and noise, and the structure is lightweight so it doesn't add extra load to the floor. It's also ideal when you need to hide services inside the wall.

On the other hand, a masonry wall has the advantage for sound insulation between rooms and load-bearing capacity for heavier items like cabinets or a bookshelf, although drywall can also be reinforced with extra studs wherever you plan to hang heavier objects.

In practice, drywall is the most common choice for smaller partitions within a flat, while masonry walls are still used for load-bearing structures or wherever sound insulation is a priority — for example, between a bedroom and a noisier part of the flat.
